What is Breast Lift Surgery?

A breast lift cosmetic surgery, clinically known as a mastopexy, is designed to provide a subtle lift to sagging breasts and make them appear firmer, perkier and more youthful. Breast lift is sometimes combined with breast implants to restore an attractive bust line and make a woman feel more confident about her body image.

Breast lift typically involves removal of loose skin, lifting of breast tissue, and shifting of areolas and nipples to a more youthful position. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jacob Bloom provides breast lift to patients in Chicago, IL and surrounding locations.

Breast Lift Techniques

Depending on the degree of drooping that a patient experiences in her breasts, the surgeon will recommend the most appropriate breast lift plastic surgery technique. Some of the key techniques include:

Crescent Lift

If the breasts are mildly sagging, Dr. Bloom will create an incision around the areola border and remove a crescent-shaped amount of skin from the top of the areola.

Circumareolar Lift

This breast lift technique also involves an incision around the areola to hide the scars. Through the incision, the surgeon will remove a doughnut-shaped amount of skin around the areola. Additional lift will be provided by pulling and tightening the skin with a purse-string type suture. Areola size can also be reduced with this technique.

Vertical Lift

Patients suffering from heavily sagging breasts may choose a vertical or ‘lollipop’ lift. The incision is placed vertically down to the breast crease. The surgeon will then remove excess skin through the incision to lift the breasts.

Full Lift

Also known as an anchor breast lift, a full lift is ideally suited for patients with extensive amount of drooping in the breasts. The breast appearance can be significantly transformed with this technique where the incisions are placed around the areola, down the breast, and along the breast crease to remove excess skin.

Breast Lift with Augmentation

If the breasts are substantially deflated, a lift procedure alone may not restore the desired firmness and shape. In such a case, Dr. Bloom may perform a combination of breast lift and breast implants, which will lift the breast tissue as well as increase the breast volume at the same time.

How the procedure is performed?

Following anesthesia, the surgeon will place the incisions in discreet locations as per the breast lift surgery plan. The surgeon will then trim away excess breast skin through the incisions. The underlying breast tissue will be gently lifted and re-contoured to elevate the position of the breasts.

If the areolas are excessively large, the surgeon may remove some of the tissue from the area to reshape them. The nipples and areolas will also be repositioned to match with the new, raised level of the breasts. Once the breast tissue has been lifted and reshaped, the surgeon will re-drape the overlying breast skin smoothly and tightly.

After the surgery, the incisions will be closed with sutures. Amazing and cordial cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL and nearby areas for breast lift.
